ROAD RAGE - 50 years of plans to build motorways through Blackheath

In the 1960s the GLC planned to build a motorway through Blackheath. It would have destroyed much of the local area including the Village. This was just one of the plans to build major roads through Blackheath developed between the 1930s and the 1980s. Paul Wright, Blackheath Society member will tell a story of low cunning on the part of the planners and resolute opposition by local residents.

7 for 7.30pm at St Mary’s Halls, Cresswell Park.

Tickets £10 from www.eventbrite.com,  includes a glass of wine.

Review:

This was a very well attended evening by members and guests for a most enlightening and amusing presentation by Paul Wright. We learnt that 50 years ago “the car was king” , plans for change were sometimes confidential and that local opposition can be effective. Blackheath Village could have been swallowed up in the dramatic plans to alleviate traffic congestion. Paul illustrated the proposed routes, the houses that would have been destroyed and the cynical advertising by the concrete firms.

The evening was most enjoyable.
