Blackheath Society sweeps top Media Awards

The Blackheath Society swept the board at the London Forum Media Awards, taking three leading prizes, as its Guardians of the Heath narrowly missed winning the top place for the best publication in a split vote.

Guardians, which celebrates the Society’s first 70 years and was published earlier this year, just lost out 3-2 when the jury voted in favour of Newington’s Green’s The Village that Changed the World, published in 2008 by the Newington Green Action Group.

The awards, made every two years, are named after Walter Bor, the first president of the London Forum of Amenity and Civic Societies, and seek to promote high standards in material published in all media by the more than 120 local member societies in the Forum from across London. Together they have over 100,000 members. The awards were presented by Dame Jennifer Jenkins, London Forum’s Patron.

Announcing the awards on 25 November, panel chairman Peter Murray said the jury had been divided between the top two books. “I really liked Guardians and it was a sign of the quality of the entries that we’ve so many good books this year,”

Murray said the Kensington Society’s annual report and the Guardians had both been highly commended in the publications category, but that the top prize had only been fought out between the Guardians and Newington Green.

The Society’s Blackheath Village Trail and Guide was commended in the same category and our vice-president Tony Aldous also won a special award for his work since he helped found the Forum in 1988. He is co-author of both the Guardians and the Trail and Guide.

These three distinctions for the Blackheath Society outclassed all the other entries, as we were the only society to be mentioned three times in the awards. The Enfield, Hackney and Mill Hill societies each gained two mentions.

Our neighbour the Westcombe News was also commended in the newsletter category, which was won by SEBRA, the newsletter published by South East Bayswater Resident’s Association. The best Website was the Hackney Society’s www.hackneysociety.org and the Media Impact Award for a society’s PR impact in the local press went to the Enfield Society.

Westcombe News editor Neville Grant, possibly letting his enthusiasm overcome a total devotion to accuracy, suggested he might run a headline on the “Blackheath Media Mafia.” Also, no-one from Newington Green turned up for the awards ceremony to claim its prize but, unfortunately, that didn’t change the judges’ minds.
