The Blackheath Society

Blackheath, with its Village and adjacent Heath, is a unique London environment.   The Blackheath Society, one of the country's oldest amenity societies, formed in 1937, exists to preserve and enhance our area.   Please join us in helping to do so.   In this site you can see what we do, and how you can help.

Allocation of OnBlackheath funding for Heath improvements 2017

For the third year running, the Blackheath Joint Working Party (“BJWP”) has been given the right to decide the allocation of funding of £15,000 to be used in 2017 for projects that support ‘improvements to or on the heath.’ This one-off funding has been provided by the organisers of the OnBlackheath festival as a contribution towards community development following on from its most recent event held in September 2016.

The BJWP wishes to open up the allocation as much as possible so as to encourage innovative projects that also have strong local support. As such, local residents and organisations with an interest in the Borough of Lewisham (for the avoidance of doubt this includes organisations containing individuals resident outside the borough) are invited to submit bids to be considered for this funding.

Those interested in applying should note the following points:

  • Proposals must be focused on improvements to or on the Lewisham side of the Heath (ie south of Shooters Hill Road).
  • The BJWP welcomes smaller scale applications (e.g. of no more than £5,000 each) as this will allow a selection of projects to be funded. However, if you feel you have a knock-out proposal that would require the full £15,000 we would still be willing to consider it.
  • Proposals that include match-funding are encouraged (please ensure details are provided in your bid).
  • Single applications submitted by a group of organisations are welcomed.

By way of illustration, previous successful projects have included: islands for birds in Prince of Wales Pond, story boards on the history, flora and fauna of Blackheath and a new bund along St German’s Place.

Application Process

  • Written and costed proposals must be submitted to the secretary of the BJWP by email to by 5pm on Wednesday, 15 February 2017.
  • The BJWP will then review the applications received and may invite proposers to attend a meeting of the BJWP at 7.30 pm on  Tuesday, 21 February 2017 at 7.30pm in  Age Exchange, Blackheath Village (access via main entrance). Please ensure that someone able to speak to the application is able to attend if invited.
  • Should an application be approved for funding, the successful proposer will also be invited to speak (or ask others to speak on their behalf) on the respective project at the BJWP’s annual public meeting in late March (currently on the evening of Tuesday, 28 March but to be confirmed).

If you have any questions, please can you email them in the first instance to Elizabeth Bryan at

The BJWP is a committee which advises the London Borough of Lewisham and the Royal Borough of Greenwich as to their management of the heath. It is formed of 6 local councillors (3 from Greenwich and Lewisham respectively) and representatives from local amenity societies which cover areas containing or bordering the heath.

Over 1200 images of Blackheath Village have been published on our sister website

Many thanks to the scanning team of Sue Shields, Helen Doris, Jo Swadkin, Hilary Weedon and Philip Smith for the many hours of hard work they have put in.

Also thanks, of course, to Neil Rhind without whom the archive would not exist.

We are happy to see the archive continue to grow and are very grateful for the recent contributions of David Warren, Frank Smith, Roger Marshall and Olive Amos. We always welcome new additions, (particularly of Blackheath in the 1960s and 1970s).

Please contact if you think you have something you would like to add (original photos will, of course, be returned after scanning by the team).
